About Our Church and the Methodist Organization
Who we are and what we do.
Surgoinsville First United Methodist is a growing church in the heart of a small town. By God’s grace, we are a part of the worldwide body of Christ. We worship, study, and strive to serve God and our neighbors in all that we do. We invite you to worship and serve with us.
What is worship like at Surgoinsville First United Methodist?
Sunday morning worship begins at 11:00 a.m. Worship is lively and joyful. You will find that we follow a traditional order of worship and that we sing primarily from the United Methodist hymnal. But you will also find that this does not mean that worship is stuffy or rigid. Within this traditional worship service it is not uncommon for people to clap, laugh, and say “Amen.” We like to say that worship at Surgoinsville is a wonderful blend of the rich tradition of the church and the down-home informality of a friendly country church.
What should I wear?
There is no dress code at our church. Some people wear jeans. Some people dress more formally. Come as you are and as you feel led.
What is the United Methodist Church?
The United Methodist Church is the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States. We are grounded in Scripture and share a lot in common with Christians across the globe. Some things that set us apart are beliefs about baptism (we baptize adults and infants) and a strong emphasis on what is called sanctification, the ongoing saving work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The official mission of the United Methodist Church is “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
